Lakeside graduate dies in Afghanistan,
Kevin Cornelius killed by ‘enemy combatant’

ASHTABULA — A 20-year-old Lakeside High School graduate and Marine died Saturday in Afghanistan from wounds he suffered at the hands of a detained enemy combatant, the U.S. Marine Corps reports.

Lance Cpl. Kevin Cornelius was shot and died in the Helmand Province of Afghanistan, his family confirmed Sunday. He was the son of Ashtabula Police Capt. Gerald Cornelius and Marlene Cornelius and Valerie and Bob Silleck, all of Ashtabula.

Lance Corporal Randy Michael Heck, 20, of Camp Lejeune, NC died Sunday, March 28, 2010 while serving his second tour of duty in Djibouti, South Africa. He was born in Tulare, CA on May 24, 1989 the son of Eugene Heck of Steubenville, OH and Teresa A. Black of Amsterdam, OH. He was preceded in death by his paternal grandfather Eugene Robinson.
Randy was Protestant by faith. He loved music, played the electric and base guitars. Randy also loved Harley motorcycles and spending time with his friends. In his high school years years at Elk City, Oklahoma he played sports, before moving to the Cadiz area in 2005. He was a 2007 graduate of Harrison High School where he excelled in track and football. He enlisted in the US Marines during his senior year and served his first tour of duty in Iraq.
Survived by his wife Kara J. Bell Heck and daughter Cali of Steubenville; parents; step-father Everett Black of Amsterdam, OH; four sisters Misty, Vicki, Kateland and Haily Heck; brother Austin Heck; three step-sisters Victoria and Linda Black and Stella Rawson; grandparents Frankie and Sherry Owens Bouslaugh of Carrollton, OH and Dollie Spencer of South Dakota.
Friends may call at Shorac Funeral Home, (the former McClave Funeral Home), 611 North Fourth, Steubenville on Wednesday 6-9 p.m., where funeral services will be held at 12:30 p.m. Thursday. Burial at Bloomingdale Cemetery where full military honors will be accorded.

Marine Gunnery Sgt. Adam F. Benjamin, a 1993 graduate of Garfield Heights High School, died Tuesday in combat, military officials said. The 34-year-old career Marine had arrived in Afghanistan only a month ago to serve in Operation Enduring Freedom.

Marty Zak of Willowick, who served in Beirut in 1981, never met Daugherty but still fought back tears while leaning up against the memorial stone, which reads, “They came in peace.”
“I didn’t know him, but he was a Marine and that is all that counts,” he said. “This means a lot because people in Beirut never really got recognized.

“Marine’s trip home to pass alma mater”.
When the second Glen Este High School graduate killed in Iraq returns home for the last time, the procession from Lunken Airport will travel past his alma mater, his parent’s house and the home of his grandfather, all in Union Township.

Wojciechowski will be return home at 2 p.m. Thursday, May 7, to Lunken Airport.

His body will be brought to Clermont County in a procession starting a Lunken and ending at Nurre Funeral Home on Ohio Pike. Visitation will be 4 p.m. to 10 p.m. Friday, May 8, at the Mt. Carmel Christian Church on Mt. Carmel-Tobasco Road with the memorial service at 10 a.m. Saturday, May 9. Burial will follow at Mt. Moriah Cemetery for family and friends.

The procession will begin at Lunken, travel east on Wilmer, Beechmont Avenue, Ohio 32, Glen Este-Withamsville Road, Clough Pike, Edinburgh Drive, Cannon Gate Drive, Regent Road, Mt. Carmel-Tobasco Road to Ohio Pike and Nurre.

LCpl Stacy Dryden, age 22, of Canton, passed away unexpectedly Sunday, in Al Asad, Iraq as a result a of non-hostile incident. She was a 2004 graduate of Glenoak High School where she was a member of the Choir. Stacy loved a challenge and trying new things and for that reason she became a United States Marine. Stacy loved her family friends and life, and lived every day to the fullest.

She is preceded in death by her maternal grandparents; Clarence and Hazel Glover and paternal grandmother, Blanche Dryden. She is survived by her mother, Thea Dryden of Canton; brother, Jake Dryden of Canton; father, Ronald ” Scott” Dryden of Canton and grandfather, Dewayne Glover of Canton. There are numerous aunts, uncles, cousins and friends also surviving. She was an American hero and will be sadly missed by everyone. Funeral services will be held Tuesday at 11:00a.m. in the Reed Funeral Home North Canton Chapel, 801 Pittsbug Ave. N.W. Interment with full military honors will be in Forest Hill Cemetery. Calling hours will be held Monday from 5-8p.m. in the funeral home. In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to the U.S. Marine Corps , Toys For Tots Program.

L/Cpl Stacy Dryden

We have a fallen Marine coming home to North East Ohio today. Stacy Dryden, from Stark County died this past Sunday at Al Asad Airbase in Iraq. Her death was non-combat related and according to news reports the incident is under investigation. You can read more at the news story posted at Ohio.Com “Stark woman in Marines dies in Iraq “.

Fall Veterans Memorial in Mentor, Ohio

Noon, this Saturday October 4th, 2008 at Mentor Civic Center ? our own HDOG will present the latest edition of his salute to veterans. This originally started out as a salute to the Beirut Veterans but like a lot of events those not honored or involved asked to have the event honor all veterans ? so now it does. This years memorial will have an emphasis on conflicts such as Beirut, Somalia, Bosnia, embassy attacks and the attack on the USS Cole as well as other conflicts during the War on Terror.

The Mentor Civic Center, or City Hall, is located at 8500 Civic Center Blvd., Mentor, Ohio.

Following the ceremony, an open house will be held at the Marine Corps League’s “Gunny’s Hall” located at 8720 Twinbrook Road, Mentor, Ohio.
